This week in Brookings: September 7–13

City Council meets Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., with a brief period beforehand when council members will participate in Chalk the Walk for Suicide Prevention Month from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. The regular meeting covers routine items including property tax abatements and approval of minutes, plus a public forum where residents can request time on the agenda for items not listed.

The Sustainability Council convenes Wednesday at a time to be confirmed, reviewing updates from its education, climate, waste, energy, and local foods subcommittees, along with trails planning and budget matters. The Historic Preservation Commission meets Thursday to discuss state case reports for two properties—819 Harvey Dunn and 919 4th Street—and to recap recent community events including trolley rides and a neighborhood block party.

September 10 brings the 10th annual One Day for STATE, a 24-hour giving campaign hosted by the SDSU Alumni & Foundation to support the university. Last year the effort raised $3.2 million from thousands of donors worldwide. This year's target is 5,000 donors.

For families, Play Dates runs Tuesday and Saturday mornings at the Children's Museum, offering free exploration time for children under three and their caregivers. The museum also hosts Sensory Friendly Play on Friday afternoon for children and families who benefit from reduced crowds and quiet environments. Playful Preschoolers meets Friday morning for hands-on, child-led activities.

McCrory Gardens hosts its Insect Festival Saturday morning and afternoon with free admission, interactive education, games, edible insects, and a pollinator costume parade. The Brookings Farmers Market runs Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon on the 300 block of 6th Avenue, featuring local vendors through late October. Saturday also brings the fifth annual 2.2 Heroes Suicide Awareness Walk, hosted by American Legion Post 114 in Volga.

SDSU football plays host to New Haven Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Volleyball competes away against #16 Kansas on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and Tulsa on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., both in Lawrence, Kansas.
