This week in Brookings: August 31–September 6

Brookings County holds two budget hearings this week as it prepares its 2027 spending plan. The County Commission meets Tuesday, September 1 at 8:30 AM to consider the provisional 2027 budget and a supplemental budget resolution for the current year. Both will open for public comment. The same meeting will also address updates to the county pay plan for 2026 and approve annexation by the City of Volga.

The Joint Board of Adjustment and Planning & Zoning Commission convene Tuesday evening to review land-use applications. The Joint Board will consider a conditional use permit for stables at 1913 20th Avenue in Brookings Township. The Planning & Zoning Commission will review a plat for CKS Partners Addition and consider a variance request for property near Volga.

The City Planning Commission meets Tuesday as well to address a variance for lot area and lot width on Lots 10 and 11 of Block 2 in Mathews and Scobeys Addition. The meeting can be viewed live on Channel 9 or streamed at cityofbrookings-sd.gov/livestream.

A life-sized Oregon Trail game experience runs multiple time slots from Monday through Thursday, with teams of six or fewer navigating the historic trail. Registration opened August 24. The Brookings Farmers Market continues Saturday mornings, 9 AM to noon, on the 300 block of 6th Avenue downtown.

SDSU volleyball hosts three home matches this week: Nebraska on Thursday at 7 PM, Western Illinois on Friday at 12:30 PM, and both Bradley and Northern Arizona on Saturday at 1 PM and 7 PM respectively, all at First Bank & Trust Arena. The football team travels to Northwestern on Sunday for a 7 PM kickoff in Evanston, Illinois.
