This week in Brookings: August 17–23

Brookings County will weigh a fire danger emergency declaration on Tuesday, as the County Commission considers Resolution 26-30 to prohibit open burning across the county. The commission will also decide on a one-day special events license for an event at the Bennett Barn on August 22, and take action on a malt beverage and farm wine license for a retail location in Elkton. All three items go to a public hearing starting at 9:00 AM Tuesday at the County Commission office.

The week brings several community gatherings. The 5th Annual International Ice Cream Social takes place Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., while Downtown at Sundown—a free outdoor music festival—runs Thursday from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Main Avenue, with local food, drinks, vendors, and activities for all ages. The Brookings Farmers Market continues Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. to noon on the 300 block of 6th Avenue. Good Roots Farm and Gardens hosts wood-fired pizza nights every Sunday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. through mid-October; pre-orders open each Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

For families, the Children's Museum offers activities throughout the week: Paper Creations Camp and Pizza Lab on Wednesday, Slime camps Thursday and Friday, and the regular Monday Play Day on August 17. A water bath canning basics class starts Thursday at 7:00 p.m. for adults interested in making salsa.

The Local Emergency Planning Committee meets Thursday at noon at the East Fire Station to discuss hazmat plan review and the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System renewal. A Brookings Tourism Ambassador Certification session is set for Wednesday at the South Dakota Art Museum.

Kart racing returns to University Plains Speedway on Saturday evening and Sunday with the South Dakota State Championship. The SDSU Jackrabbits volleyball team plays an exhibition match Friday at 6:00 p.m. at First Bank & Trust Arena against Southwest Minnesota State.
