County and city boards meet this week to handle routine business and consider three new land plats for Brookings County. The Commission convenes Tuesday, October 20 at 8:30 AM to vote on resolutions approving plats for Werre Farm Addition, Berwald Addition, and Froiland Addition—land divisions that clear the way for development in their respective locations. The Commission will also consider rescinding a burn ban that was put in place August 18. The Brookings Public Arts Commission meets the same morning to discuss updates to the city website, review the application process for artists, and hear a status report on the skate park project. City Council members may attend the Hobo Day Parade on Saturday morning, but no official city business will be conducted.

Notice: possible quorum — Hobo Day Parade — Sat, Oct 24, 2026

At least four City Council members may be present at the Hobo Day Parade on October 24 at 9:30 am. Parade line up begins at 8:00 am on the South Dakota State University campus and near the South Dakota Art Museum. The route starts at 11th Street and Medary Avenue, heads south on Medary to 6th Street, then west on 6th Street for six blocks, then south on Main Avenue for three blocks. No official city business will be conducted.

Commission — Tue, Oct 20, 2026

The Commission will consider rescinding a burn ban enacted in August. Three plats will be approved: Werre Farm Addition in Section 10, Berwald Addition in Section 1, and Froiland Addition in Section 6, all in Brookings County. The Commission will approve a state contract for community health services and a three-year lease renewal for the Community Health and WIC offices at 1303 Trail Ridge Road. An agreement with CivicPlus for web accessibility services will be considered. The Commission will review a schematic design estimate for courthouse cupola restoration work, including re-anchoring masonry walls, joint sealants, and roof metal panel painting. An equipment operator vacancy in the Highway Department will be addressed. Multiple appointments to county boards and commissions will be made, and recommendations will be submitted to the City of Brookings for board positions. An executive session on personnel and contract negotiations is scheduled, followed by a separate executive session on department head reviews.

The Public Arts Commission will consider city website additions, updates to the proposal and application process, and a skate park update. A public suggestion form will also be discussed. Public comment is limited to three minutes per person.

Human Rights Commission — Tue, Oct 20, 2026

The Human Rights Commission will address membership and budget matters, consider an ordinance, and discuss open meeting laws and a Brookings Multicultural Center New Year's Eve Party event. The commission will also hear updates from liaisons at the Brookings Police Department, Brookings School District, and South Dakota State University, as well as reports from task forces and work groups focused on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, advocacy, education, outreach, and communications.
