This week in Brookings: September 28–October 4

The Utility Board and Airport Board both meet this week as part of regular municipal operations. The Airport Board gathers Thursday October 1 to review monthly operations and updates on the SRE Building Project, along with a rent and fee study. The Utility Board meets Monday September 28. Both meetings are open to the public, and anyone wishing to speak at the Airport Board meeting may do so during the open forum period, limited to three minutes per person.

The Brookings Family Bash returns Monday September 28 from 4:30 to 7:00 PM at Dakota Nature Park, 1705 32nd St. S. Hosted by Brookings Area United Way and the Brookings Mental Health Coalition, the free event offers an evening meal, mini-golf, activities, and frozen treats for families.

Play Dates, a free program for children ages 0–36 months and their caregivers, meets Tuesday September 29 at 9:00 AM at 521 4th St. The program focuses on hands-on play and exploration; space is limited and advance registration is required.

Wednesday September 30 brings several evening options. Pages + Pairings at Mosaic Wine Bar & Small Plates starts at 7:00 PM, featuring wine and book pairings co-hosted by Pasque bookstore. Trivia Night at Wooden Legs Brewing Company, 309 5th Street, begins at 7:30 PM and runs until 10:00 PM; the game is free and 21+ only, with tables available on a first-come basis. The Library also offers a Wood Ghost Workshop at 5:30 PM where participants ages 13 and up paint and assemble laser-cut ghosts for fall décor; registration opens September 24 and participants choose between a book or pumpkin design.

Thursday October 1 continues the week's activities. The Library repeats the Wood Ghost Workshop at 1:00 PM and 5:30 PM with the same registration and age requirements. Eponymous Brewing Company hosts Trivia Night at 7:00 PM, free to play with prizes, wrapping up by 9:00 PM; team size is limited to fewer than six people. Dr. Ashley Howard, a history professor at the University of Iowa, presents "Black Midwestern Histories" at 5:30 PM, exploring Black histories of the Midwest and their connections to race, class, gender, and racial violence, followed by open dialogue.

SDSU volleyball plays at Omaha Thursday October 1 at 6:30 PM and at St. Thomas Saturday October 3 at 12:00 PM. Football faces Illinois State Saturday October 3 at 6:00 PM in Normal, Illinois.
