County and city boards meet this week to handle routine business and consider three new land plats for Brookings County. The Commission convenes Tuesday, October 20 at 8:30 AM to vote on resolutions approving plats for Werre Farm Addition, Berwald Addition, and Froiland Addition—land divisions that clear the way for development in their respective locations. The Commission will also consider rescinding a burn ban that was put in place August 18. The Brookings Public Arts Commission meets the same morning to discuss updates to the city website, review the application process for artists, and hear a status report on the skate park project. City Council members may attend the Hobo Day Parade on Saturday morning, but no official city business will be conducted.

Saturday is dominated by the 114th Hobo Day celebration, anchored by the parade at 9:30 AM starting at Medary Avenue and South Dakota State University, running south to downtown Brookings. The South Dakota State University Jackrabbits face Murray State in football at 2:00 PM at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, and the volleyball team hosts South Dakota at 7:00 PM at First Bank & Trust Arena. Earlier Saturday morning, the American Legion Post 74 serves a pancake breakfast at 8:00 AM, with proceeds supporting Boys State, American Legion Baseball, Youth Trooper Academy, and scholarships. The Yule Market opens the same day at 10:00 AM at the South Dakota Art Museum, featuring handcrafted items from local and regional artists and running through January 9, 2027.

Through the week, the community calendar fills with smaller gatherings. Monday features Halloween craft classes and a Make & Take at the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum. Tuesday brings Play Dates for young children and a Film and Fidget screening of Scooby Doo with air dry clay activities. Wednesday offers book clubs for tweens and teens, a Books + Banter discussion at Mosaic Wine Bar about "A Biography of a Mountain," and trivia night at Wooden Legs Brewing. Friday features Playful Preschoolers and sensory-friendly playtime at the Children's Museum. Monday October 26 closes with a Spice Club session on black pepper.
