This week brings a full slate of public business, plus a runoff election result and a downtown gathering.

The Brookings County Commission meets Thursday, July 30, at 8:30 a.m., with two items that carry real weight for residents. The commission is set to act on Resolution #26-29, which would approve a construction and operating permit for a solid waste facility in Brookings County. Letters from Dakota Recycling and the City of Volga are part of the record on that item. The same meeting includes the canvass of the July 28 gubernatorial run-off election, where the commission will review and act on the official results.

The City Council has two meetings this week. On Monday, July 27, the council's agenda is largely procedural, including a report from the SDSU Student Association, with no major action items listed. On Thursday, July 30, the council takes up more substantive business: a public hearing on Resolution 26-041, a resolution of intent to lease city-owned real property to RTI, LLC, and the second reading of Ordinance 26-022, which would authorize Budget Amendment No. 5 to the 2026 city budget. The council will also hear an informational report on the 2025 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report and audit summary. Separately, the city has given notice that at least four council members may be present at Thursday evening's Downtown at Sundown event on Main Avenue — a quorum notice only, since no official city business will be conducted there.

Looking a bit further ahead, the commission's posted notices flag several dates worth knowing: Brookings County 4-H Achievement Days run August 3–6 at the Dacotah Bank Center, National Night Out happens August 4 on Kasan Avenue in Volga from 5 to 8 p.m., and city offices will close September 7 for Labor Day.

On the lighter side, the library's Bricks and Flicks series screens "Raiders of the Lost Ark" on Tuesday, July 28, at 10:30 p.m., paired with a small brick-building project. Registration is required for anyone who wants a building kit; kids five and under will get coloring sheets instead. Those who just want to watch the movie or bring their own project can attend without registering.

For residents who want to weigh in, the solid waste facility permit and the gubernatorial run-off canvass are both on the commission's Thursday morning agenda at 8:30 a.m., open for public comment ahead of any vote. The council's Thursday evening public hearing on the RTI, LLC lease is also open for comment before the council acts. And if you're downtown Thursday evening for Downtown at Sundown, you may see several council members among the crowd — just not conducting city business.
